The Highest Grossing Horror Movies of All Time!

The Highest Grossing Horror Movies of All Time! {0}

Box office watchers will be familiar with the phrase “biggest ever”, which seems to crop up a couple of times a month when the performance of the latest blockbuster is trumpeted: “Biggest ever Thursday in October!” “Biggest ever non-holiday weekend opening for a non-sequel!”

When the hype and the hyperbole die down, however, there are clear winners and losers in the global box office charts – but what are the horror genre’s biggest box office hits of all time?  More

Film criticism can be a dispiriting experience. It’s no fun wading through hours of rubbish, even when it’s well-meaning (or even well made). But nothing makes this critic more dismayed than when bad movies happen to good people. Case in point: Open Windows, the new film from Nacho Vigalondo (well, new-ish – the prolific Spanish writer-director has turned out the “Parallel Monsters” segment of V/H/S: Viral and a new short film, Salon de Belleza, since wrapping Open Windows), starring Elijah Wood and Sasha Grey. For all the whining and complaining we do about vampire stories that render the creatures as toothless and anemic whiners (my apologies to the fans of Twilight and/or Dracula Untold), there always seem to be a few independent filmmakers who find a new and novel use for the legendary bloodsuckers. This year alone yields films as interesting and disparate as Only Lovers Left Alive and Summer of Blood as evidence that, while vampires have certainly come a long way since Max Schreck and Bela Lugosi, they haven’t been completely demolished by young adult fiction or ill-conceived action epics.

Whenever it seems like the werewolf movie has been completely forgotten, we get a nice reminder that this immortal legend of horror cinema will always have its fair share of supporters. It was way back in 1981 when The Howling, Wolfen, and An American Werewolf in London hit the screens, and while there was a semi-resurgence with Ginger Snaps (2000), Dog Soldiers (2002), and (to a degree) The Wolfman (2010), we don’t seem to get half-decent lycanthropic cinema all that frequently.

Crowdfunded creepfest Borley Rectory didn’t quite make its £10,000 target back in August, but that hasn’t stopped the people behind the film pushing forward with their unique animation project –and this week they’ve added a pretty special new perk to help them with completion funds for the production. The Bigfoot Project

Sometimes it’s really weird how these things work out: Dredd and The Raid came out around the same time, and they had a lot of plot components in common. More recently we saw two cult-related indie horror films (The Sacrament and Children of Sorrow) that were released (and produced) only months apart, and also bear a few striking similarities. Now we get two completely unrelated but very similar “found footage Bigfoot horror” movies inWillow Creek and Exists.

The Greatest Horror Movie of All Time?

Your mileage, of course, may vary. Whether you’re more of a fan of The Exorcist or a Halloween lover, there’s no denying the impact Tobe Hooper’s backwoods slasher classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has had on the horror scene since its 1974 release. We all know the story, of course: packing into their camper van, a gang of young hippies head out to an old house in the country. There they encounter a family of bloodthirsty cannibals – most notably the obese, shrieking ‘Leatherface’ and his trusty chainsaw. What ensues could easily, if arguably, be described as the greatest horror movie of all time.
