Review: TO JENNIFER {0}
The idea of a micro-budget found footage horror film shot entirely with an iPhone might be a quick turn-off for a lot of viewers – the iPhone is hardly a professional-level cinematographer’s tool, after all – but for those with an open mind, a little bit of patience, or a pointed interest in “DIY” filmmaking techniques, the scrappy but engaging To Jennifer may prove to be quite interesting. It’s not that To Jennifer boasts a particularly eventful plot or much in the way of visual accomplishment, but for all its budgetary constraints, a handful of improvisational rough spots, and a few redundancies here and there, the movie stands as compelling evidence that pretty much anyone can make a movie these days.

Exclusive Review: THE THING ON THE DOORSTEP (2014) {0}
Kudos to any independent filmmaker who dares to brave an H.P. Lovecraft adaptation (especially the ones who try to remain relatively faithful to the author’s work), as opposed to yet another woods-bound slasher flick. As cool as Lovecraft can be on the page, he’s a remarkably difficult author when it comes to cinematic adaptations, and it’s always worth noting when low-budget filmmakers try to tackle one of the man’s stories. In recent years we’ve seen “fan-made” features based on The Call of Cthulhu, The Colour Out of Space, and The Whisperer in Darkness – and while each of them have their issues (most of which stem from budgetary concerns and not a lack of creativity), they’re all definitely worth checking out if, like me, you’re a big fan of (almost) all things Lovecraftian.

Exclusive Review: HOOKED UP {0}
A found footage horror film which opens with one of its young, white, laddish protagonists throwing up into a toilet while his idiot friend films it all, incessantly jabbering about all of the girls he intends to lay during their lads’ holiday in Barcelona: if first impressions are anything to go by, Hooked Up is likely to have as many people turning off their TV as the ladies will be (turned off, that is) by the behaviour on display.
Stick with it though, for beyond the Hostel-esque opening (featuring some attitude that makes the young lads of The Inbetweeners look positively civilised by comparison) there’s a very solid horror film to be found, with surprisingly top-notch action and very decent scares. Not bad considering they filmed it all on an iPhone. Wait, what?
