Breaking: STONEHEARST ASYLUM Opens in the UK {0}
Stonehearst Asylum, the gothic psychological thriller starring Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, David Thewlis, Jason Flemying, Brendan Gleeson, Sir Ben Kingsley and Sir Michael Caine, will be released in the UK this April, courtesy of Lionsgate. The film, based on a short story by Edgar Allen Poe, is directed by Brad Anderson (The Machinist, Transsiberian).

Duel to the Death… ON WHEELS {0}
Here’s an interesting crowdfunding project: The Devil on Wheels, a feature-length documentary examining the making of and enduring cult surrounding Duel, Steven Spielberg’s 1971 made-for-TV movie in which a terrifying Peterbilt truck, whose driver we never see, chases a lone driver along the desert roads of Southern California. Such was its success that the film was extended and distributed as a film worldwide.

Review: WYRMWOOD: ROAD OF THE DEAD (2014) {0}
When it comes to over-the-top and unapologetically insane independent genre films, few nations on this fine planet come close to touching Australia. I knew it the second I saw Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior back in 1983, and nothing I’ve seen in the intervening years has proved my theory wrong: Australians know how to produce certifiably insane movies of the action, sci-fi, and horror varieties. (If you need a quick history lesson on this topic, check out Mark Hartley’s fantastic documentary called Not Quite Hollywood.) That’s not to say that Aussie filmmakers don’t churn out some turkeys once in a while, but I’ve seen enough genre-style imports from this country to make a fan for life. The wacky new zombie flick Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead is a pretty solid example of what I’m talking about.

Mental illness is no laughing matter, especially where schizophrenia, paranoid delusions and psychosis are concerned. But that hasn’t stopped screenwriter Michael R. Perry – a veteran of genre TV shows like Eerie, Indiana, American Gothic, Millennium, Stephen King’s Dead Zone and The River, and co-writer of Paranormal Activity 2 – from concocting a supremely weird and entirely wonderful black comedy from the plight of Jerry (Ryan Reynolds), a shipping clerk for small town bathroom fittings company Milton Fixture and Faucet who is given to paranoid delusions that his cat (Mr Whiskers) and dog (Boscoe) are talking to him – in, respectively, a potty-mouthed Scots accent and a low Southern drawl.
